Tell companies about the mold

No obligation. Independent local companies reply to you directly.

What happens next

  1. Your request is passed along

It goes to independent mold companies that work in your area. Someone may call or text if a key detail is missing, such as your ZIP code or a rough size.

  2. Companies contact you

They may ask questions, ask for photos or set a time to look. Companies reply on their own schedules, and replies can be slower after a big storm or a long wet stretch.

  3. You compare and decide

Ask each company for a written estimate, its certifications and an insurance certificate. Quotes are free, and you are not obligated to hire anyone.

What helps companies quote accurately

A few details save a lot of back and forth. You don't need all of them, and rough is fine.

  • Where it is. Crawl space joists, the attic decking, a basement wall, a bathroom ceiling, around an AC vent, or a wall that got wet. Include your town or ZIP code.
  • Roughly how big. A dinner plate, a 3 by 3 foot patch, one wall, the whole crawl space. Companies will measure.
  • The water source, if you know it. A roof leak, a plumbing leak, an AC condensate line, groundwater, or creek or river flooding.
  • When it got wet. Days ago, weeks ago or not sure. EPA advises drying water-damaged areas within 24–48 hours, so timing helps a company plan drying and tear-out.
  • The age of the house. Older homes, like many in Trinity Park, Old West Durham or the mill houses near downtown, may need an asbestos check before materials come out.
  • Own or rent. Renters should send the landlord a written repair request and keep a copy. North Carolina tenants may not withhold rent on their own without a court ruling (G.S. 42-44(c)). This is not legal advice.
  • Insurance claim. Say if a claim is open. Homeowners policies exclude flood, and mold coverage often has limits, so check your declarations page.
  • Photos later. You don't need to upload anything now. A company may ask for photos when it contacts you. Take them before anything is moved or cleaned.

Before you sign with anyone

North Carolina does not license mold inspection or remediation companies, so checking credentials is up to you. You can check IICRC and ACAC certifications on their public locators, ask for a certificate of insurance, and look up an NC general contractor license for rebuild work of $40,000 or more (G.S. 87-1).

  • Get a written scope: what will be contained, removed, cleaned and dried, and how the moisture source will be fixed.
  • Ask who will do clearance testing after the work. State health guidance (NCDHHS, 2005) advises not hiring a consultant who also does the remediation. It is best practice, not a legal requirement.
  • In an older home, ask whether an accredited asbestos inspection is needed before tear-out. Questions go to the NC Health Hazards Control Unit at 919-707-5950.
  • Get the warranty terms in writing.
  • If a company signs you up in your home, NC law generally gives you until midnight of the third business day to cancel an off-premises sale of $25 or more (G.S. 14-401.13). Ask for the cancellation form, and ask whether it applies to your contract.
