Apex takes its name from being the highest point on the old Chatham Railroad. Its train depot dates to 1867 and is a Wake County landmark, and the downtown area was designated a historic district in 1994. The town is mostly in Wake County, with a part in Chatham.
Most of Apex is much newer than its downtown. The Census Bureau counted 64,366 residents in 2020 and estimates 80,419 for July 1, 2025 (PEP Vintage 2025), about 25% growth in five years.
With growth that fast, some houses here may still be under builder warranties, which is worth checking before you pay for repairs. The weather is the same as the rest of the Triangle: about 46 inches of rain a year at Raleigh-Durham International Airport, with July and September the wettest months (NOAA 1991–2020). FEMA major-disaster declarations that include Wake County cover Hurricanes Fran (1996), Floyd (1999), Isabel (2003) and Matthew (2016), plus the April 2011 storms. Wake County was not part of the federal declaration for Chantal in 2025.

What newer homes run into
With nearly half of homes built since 2010, mold in Apex is rarely about age. These are general patterns, not findings about any house:
- Attics. Bath and dryer vents that end in the attic, or thin insulation over a cold duct, can wet roof decking. See attic mold.
- Air conditioning. RDU averages about 52 days a year at 90°F or hotter (NOAA 1991–2020), so AC runs hard. Condensate lines and air handlers are common sources. See HVAC and duct mold.
- Construction moisture. Framing and drywall closed in during a wet stretch can hold water. The new-construction mold guide covers this.
- Plumbing. Supply lines under sinks and behind appliances drip quietly. A musty cabinet is a common first clue.
Costs and rules
Published national estimates put an attic job at $1,500–$9,000 (Fixr, Aug 2025) or $1,000–$4,000 (This Old House, Mar 2026), and HVAC or duct work at $3,000–$10,000. These are not quotes. The cost guide has the full table and a calculator.
NC rules box. North Carolina does not license mold inspection or remediation companies, so checking credentials is up to you. Check IICRC or ACAC credentials, ask for an insurance certificate, and get the scope and warranty terms in writing. Rebuild work of $40,000 or more needs an NC general contractor (G.S. 87-1). Smaller non-structural repairs in a single-family home usually need no permit (G.S. 160D-1110(c)); your contractor confirms with the local inspections office.
Apex mold questions
Can a brand-new Apex home have mold?
Yes. Age matters less than water. New homes can trap moisture from construction, and they can also get mold from a clogged AC drain, a sweating duct, a roof flashing leak or a drip behind a dishwasher. If the house is still under a builder warranty, report it in writing and read what the warranty covers before you hire anyone.
Is my Apex house on a crawl space or a slab?
Check the outside of the foundation for vents or an access door. Nationally, most new single-family homes are built on slabs, and in the South Atlantic region 85.7% of 2024 starts were slab (NAHB). Older and some newer Apex homes still sit on crawl spaces, which need their own moisture checks.
Who checks the work after mold removal?
North Carolina has no state rule on clearance, but many homeowners hire an independent inspector to look and test after cleanup. State health guidance advises not hiring a consultant who also does the remediation. That is best practice, not law. Agree on who does clearance and what passes before the job starts.
